Blocked drain in Brighton? Here’s how we clear it.
Most of our Brighton drain callouts are to older clay drains under Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and to converted houses where several flats share one drain. We clear the blockage first, then camera-survey the pipe so you know whether it will happen again.
- Kitchen, toilet and outside drains cleared by jetting and rodding
- CCTV camera survey, with the footage talked through on site
- Tree roots, fat and wipe build-up cut out of old clay pipes
- Cracked and displaced joints repaired
- Gullies and inspection chambers cleared and flushed
Why Brighton drains block
Large parts of Brighton were built in the Victorian and Edwardian era. Streets in Hanover, Kemptown, Round Hill and Preston Park still drain through the original clay pipes. Over the years the joints shift, and once a joint opens up, roots and grease catch on the edge. That is why the same drain can block every few months.
Many of those houses are now flats. A basement or ground floor flat sits at the lowest point of the drain, so when it blocks, that is where the waste comes up first. If you live upstairs and your toilet or sink is slow to drain, the flat below may already have a problem.
Terraced streets often share one drain run along the back of the houses or under the gardens. Since October 2011, a drain that serves more than one property and sits outside your boundary has usually belonged to Southern Water, the sewerage company for Brighton and Hove. We find where the blockage is before we start. If it is on Southern Water’s side, we tell you, so you are not paying for their repair.
Cafés, pubs and restaurants in the North Laine, The Lanes and along the seafront send a lot of fat and food waste into the drains. If you run a food business, we can clear a blocked drain overnight or early in the morning, so you can open on time.
