What we fix

Stopcock or mains problem in Hove? Here’s how we help.

Old stopcocks are often stiff because nobody has turned them in years. We do not force them. We replace a seized valve with a lever valve you can turn by hand.

  • Seized and leaking stopcocks replaced
  • Supply pipe leaks between the boundary and the house traced and repaired
  • Old lead supply pipe replaced with modern pipe
  • Separate isolation valves fitted for each flat where possible
  • Help finding a stopcock nobody can locate

Stopcocks and supply pipes in Hove

In the Victorian and Edwardian houses around Goldsmid, Westbourne and the Hove station streets, the stopcock is often under the floorboards in the hall, in a cellar, or behind a kitchen kickboard. In the Regency buildings of Brunswick it may be in the basement or the front lightwell. Find yours before you need it. If you cannot, ask us to show you when we visit.

Many houses converted into flats still have a single supply pipe and one stopcock for the whole building. Turn it off and every flat loses water. Where the pipework allows, we can fit a separate valve for each flat, so one leak does not cut off the building.

Older Hove homes, usually those built before about 1970, may still have a lead supply pipe. If yours is lead, we can replace the section on your side when we repair a leak. You can also ask Southern Water about the section they look after.

Southern Water supplies the water in Hove. Generally, the pipe from the stop tap at your boundary to the house is yours, and the pipe from the main to the boundary is theirs. Water rising in the pavement is usually theirs to repair. We tell you which side a leak is on before any work starts.
