Stopcock stuck or mains leaking? Here’s what we do.
If you cannot turn the water off, everything else gets harder. We isolate at the outside stop tap where we can, replace the seized or leaking valve with one you can turn, and repair or renew the supply pipe if that is where the water is escaping.
- Seized and leaking stopcocks replaced with lever valves
- Mains supply leaks traced in gardens, driveways and floors
- Old lead and steel supply pipes replaced
- Extra isolating valves fitted where they help
- Floors and finishes made good after the repair
Water supply pipes in Sussex, and who owns them
Sussex is not served by one water company. Southern Water handles sewerage for the whole county, but your drinking water could come from Southern Water, South East Water, Portsmouth Water or SES Water, depending on where you live. The name is on your water bill, and that is who to call about a leak on their side.
The usual rule is that the water company owns the pipe up to the outside stop tap or meter near your boundary, and you own the supply pipe from there into the house. A leak in your front garden is often yours to fix. Some water companies help with repairs to leaking supply pipes, so it is worth asking yours.
Homes built before 1970 may still have a lead supply pipe, because lead was used for water pipes until then. Many period homes across Sussex have had theirs replaced, but not all. The stopcocks on these older pipes are usually brass and often seized. Forcing one can snap the spindle or crack the pipe.
In terraces and older blocks of flats, several homes sometimes share one supply pipe, and one stopcock can turn off the neighbours too. In rural homes the supply can run a long way across land before it reaches the house. Both make leaks harder to find, which is why we trace before we dig.
