What we fix

Tap or shower leaking? Here’s how we fix it.

Most drips come from a worn ceramic cartridge or washer. Most shower leaks come from the valve, the waste or a failed seal around the tray. We find which it is, fit the right part, and check nothing has been leaking out of sight.

  • Tap washers, ceramic cartridges and O-rings replaced
  • Thermostatic and mixer shower valves repaired or replaced
  • Shower trays and wastes re-sealed
  • Hidden leaks behind tiles traced
  • Like-for-like taps and valves fitted where parts are obsolete

Local knowledge

Why taps and showers wear out in Sussex

Hard water is the main reason. Much of Sussex is supplied from chalk, and the limescale it leaves builds up inside tap cartridges and shower valves. Scale scratches the ceramic discs and stiffens the moving parts, so a tap starts to drip and a thermostatic shower starts to run hot and cold.

Southern Water fitted meters to most of the homes it supplies between 2010 and 2015. On a meter, a tap that drips all day is water you pay for twice: once coming in, and again in the sewerage charge, which is worked out from the water you use.

Period homes in older town centres and villages often have traditional taps with rubber washers. Modern homes mostly have quarter-turn ceramic cartridges. Both are fixable, but the parts are different, so a photo of the tap when you call helps us bring the right one.

Shower leaks are often hidden. Water gets behind tiles through cracked grout or a failed seal and shows up as a stain on the ceiling below, or a floor that feels soft. We test the tray, waste and valve one at a time to find the real cause. A slow leak like this can rot a timber floor long before it shows.

Questions

Leaking tap or shower? Common questions

Because the washer or cartridge is worn. Turning harder only crushes the washer further or strains the cartridge. Replacing the worn part is the proper fix.
