Boiler breakdowns across Sussex
Most homes in Sussex towns have a gas condensing boiler. Since 2005, nearly all new gas boilers fitted in England have had to be condensing models. They are efficient, but they rely on a plastic condensate pipe that carries waste water to a drain. If that pipe blocks or freezes, the boiler locks out.
Boilers work hardest in the first cold spell of autumn. Faults that crept in over the summer, such as a sticking pump, a weak expansion vessel or a slow leak, often show up the first week the heating runs all day. If your boiler struggled at the end of last winter, it is likely to struggle again.
Inland, in the Weald and on higher ground, winter nights get much colder than on the coast. Condensate pipes that run outside to a drain are more likely to freeze there. We thaw the pipe, restart the boiler and suggest a better route for it.
