Stopcocks and supply pipes in Crawley

Crawley has two water companies. Southern Water supplies drinking water to most of the town, and Thames Water runs the sewers. For a supply leak, it is the water supply company that matters. The pipe from the boundary to your house is normally your responsibility, and the pipe in the street is theirs.

In many post-war Crawley houses the stopcock is under the kitchen sink or in a cupboard by the front door. After seventy years of being left alone, an old brass stopcock may not turn at all. Do not force it, because the spindle can snap and make things worse.

The outside stop tap is usually under a small cover in the pavement or path near your boundary, often next to the water meter. On older estates it can be shared with a neighbour or hard to find under paving. We bring the right key and can isolate the supply there while we work.

Flats above parades and in low-rise blocks can be fed from a shared supply, with the stopcock in a cupboard on the landing or a basement room. Find out where yours is before you need it. If you cannot find it, we can show you, and fit a lever valve inside your flat so you can turn off your own water.

Questions

Stopcock or mains leak in Crawley? Common questions

The supply pipe from your boundary to the house is normally yours. The pipe in the street, and up to the boundary, is the water company’s. For most of Crawley that is Southern Water. We confirm where the leak is before doing any work.
