What we fix

Stopcock or mains problem in Eastbourne? Here’s how we fix it.

A stopcock is only useful if you can find it and turn it. In many older Eastbourne homes it is hidden in a cellar, under floorboards or behind kitchen units. We fix the leak and leave you with a valve you can reach.

  • Seized and leaking stopcocks replaced with lever valves
  • Leaks on the supply pipe traced and repaired
  • Old lead supply pipes replaced
  • Separate isolating valves fitted for each flat
  • Outside stop tap located and checked

Stopcocks and mains supply in Eastbourne

Eastbourne’s tap water is supplied by South East Water. Southern Water handles the sewerage, which is a different company. For the supply, the pipe from the boundary into your home is normally yours. The pipe up to the boundary, and the outside stop tap, are usually South East Water’s. We find where the leak is and tell you whose it is before we start.

Houses built before the 1970s may still have a lead supply pipe and an old brass stopcock. Those valves stiffen over the years and can snap if forced. In some Victorian and Edwardian homes the stopcock sits in a cellar or under the hall floor. We replace it with a lever valve and, if needed, fit a second one somewhere easy to reach.

Many converted houses in Meads, Upperton and the town centre were split into flats without giving each one its own stopcock. One valve may shut off the whole building. If you own or manage flats, we can fit separate isolating valves so a leak in one flat does not cut off water to all of them.

For an older person living alone, a stiff stopcock is a real worry. We fit a valve that can be turned by hand and show you where it is before we leave.
