Blocked drain in Sussex? Here’s how we clear it.
We lift the covers to find where the blockage sits, clear it with high-pressure jetting or rods, then run a camera through if there is any sign of damage. You see what we see, so any decision on a repair is made on the facts.
- High-pressure jetting and rodding of foul and surface water drains
- CCTV camera surveys, with the footage explained on site
- Roots cut out and fat and wipe build-up removed
- Gullies, inspection chambers and soakaways cleared
- Cracked, displaced and collapsed sections repaired
How the ground affects drains across Sussex
Sussex sits on very different ground. The South Downs are chalk. Much of the Weald, between the Downs and the Surrey and Kent borders, is clay. Clay shrinks in dry summers and swells when it is wet, and that movement can open up the joints in older clay drains. Once a joint is open, roots and debris catch on it.
In rural and village homes, mature trees and hedges are often close to the drain run. Roots follow moisture into a cracked joint and keep growing. Jetting clears them, but the camera shows whether the joint needs repairing to stop them coming back.
Southern Water is the sewerage company for the whole of Sussex. Since October 2011, most drains and sewers that serve more than one property, or that run outside your boundary, have been its responsibility. A drain that serves only your home and sits within your boundary is yours. We locate the blockage before we charge for anything.
Older town centres often have combined drains, where rainwater and waste share one pipe. In very heavy rain these can back up even when nothing is blocked. We check the levels in your chambers and tell you whether the problem is in your drain or the public sewer.
