What we fix

Appliance leaking? Here’s how we sort it.

Most appliance leaks are in the plumbing around the machine, not the machine itself. We test the supply hose, isolating valve, waste pipe and trap in turn. If the fault is inside the appliance, we say so before you spend any more.

  • Split and perished fill hoses replaced
  • Waste pipes, standpipes and traps re-plumbed
  • Isolating valves fitted or replaced
  • Leaks under sinks and kitchen units traced
  • Swollen units, worktops and flooring repaired by our own trades

Appliance leaks in Sussex homes

In many older Sussex houses and flats, the washing machine sits in the kitchen and shares a waste pipe with the sink. Over time grease and lint build up in that shared waste, and the machine’s pump forces water back up. It looks like the machine is leaking, but the cause is a part-blocked waste.

Hard water leaves scale in valves and hose fittings. A fill valve that is stiff with scale may not shut fully, and an old hose with a crusted connection can split under mains pressure. A leak from the back of the machine is often the fill hose or the valve it screws onto.

In converted flats and upstairs kitchens, a leaking dishwasher or washing machine soon becomes a ceiling problem for the flat below. Turn the valve off and let your neighbour know. We can trace the leak and, as a multi-trade team, repair their ceiling as well.

Laminate, plinths and chipboard cabinets soak up water and swell, and once swollen they rarely go back. After the leak is fixed we can replace the damaged units and flooring, so you are not left waiting for a second trade. Taking the kickboards off and drying underneath quickly gives the cabinets the best chance.

Questions

Leaking washing machine or dishwasher? Common questions

Usually behind the machine or in the cupboard next to it, on the pipe the hose screws onto. It is often a small lever or a slotted screw. A quarter turn, so it sits across the pipe, closes it. If you cannot find one, turn off the stopcock.
